A weekend in Christchurch can be genuinely excellent if you know what to prioritise. The city has enough to fill two days without rushing — a great farmers market, a harbour town worth exploring, proper Port Hills walks, the CBD's food and culture precinct, and some of the South Island's best cafe and restaurant options.
This guide gives you a tested two-day framework, with enough flexibility to suit different interests. The golden rule: don't over-schedule. Christchurch rewards those who linger.
Saturday Morning — Lyttelton Farmers Market
Start with the Lyttelton Farmers Market at the Time Ball Station. It runs from about 9am and the best stalls are at their fullest early. Get coffee from the market vendors, pick up some exceptional local produce, and take time to walk around the market properly. From there, explore London Street — Wunderbar, independent shops, a look at the harbour. Allow two to three hours for the whole Lyttelton morning.
Saturday Lunch — Riverside Market or Fiddlesticks
Return to the city via the tunnel and head to the Riverside Market on Oxford Terrace for a relaxed lunch. Multiple food traders in a riverside setting — ideal for groups with different food preferences. If you want something more sit-down, Fiddlesticks next door does an excellent lunch service. Book ahead if it's a sunny Saturday.
Saturday Afternoon — Botanic Gardens and Avon River
Walk through the Botanic Gardens from Rolleston Avenue. The rose garden, glasshouses, and Peacock fountain are worth seeing. Pick up a punt from the Antigua Boatsheds if you want a gentle river experience. The afternoon in the gardens is a classic Christchurch Saturday — local families, visitors, dogs, kids. The cafe in the gardens is a good afternoon tea stop.
Saturday Evening — Dinner in the CBD
The inner city has good options for a Saturday night. King of Snake on Victoria Street does excellent Asian-influenced small plates and cocktails. Lola Rojo for Spanish tapas and good Iberian wine. Saggio di Vino for refined Italian. Book ahead for any of these — Saturday night in the CBD fills up. Pre-dinner drinks on Oxford Terrace if the weather cooperates.
Sunday Morning — Brunch in Merivale or Sydenham
Sunday is brunch day. Merivale village on Papanui Road has a cluster of good options — Strange & Co is excellent. Sydenham has several good cafes that are worth the slightly longer drive. The Birdwood in Fendalton is a beautiful garden cafe for a slower Sunday. Pick your neighbourhood and walk to it if you're staying locally — that's half the point.
Sunday Afternoon — Port Hills Walk
Work off brunch with a Port Hills walk. The Gondola is good for a quick scenic hit if you don't want a major climb. For those who want to walk, Rapaki Track from Heathcote gives you a proper 2-3 hour return hike with excellent views. The Crater Rim in good weather is hard to beat. End with a post-walk flat white in Cashmere or Heathcote if you can find a cafe open.
Sunday Evening — Sumner or a Quiet Local
End the weekend in Sumner if the weather is kind. The beachside village has good cafes and a relaxed atmosphere. It's also just nice to sit on the beach and watch the end of a Canterbury day. Alternatively, find a good neighbourhood pub or wine bar and call it a weekend. The Volstead is a good late-Sunday option in the city.
Local Tips
- Saturday morning traffic to Lyttelton can be slow — go via the tunnel early to beat the queue.
- Book Saturday night restaurants by Thursday at the latest for popular spots.
- The Botanic Gardens and museum are free — build them into the itinerary without budget stress.
- Christchurch weather is variable. Have a plan B for a wet Sunday (Canterbury Museum or Christchurch Art Gallery).
- The city is flat and cycleable — hiring bikes for the weekend is a genuinely good option.
