The stretch of bars along Oxford Terrace overlooking the Avon is the best place to start an evening. Several bars have outdoor decking over the river and on a warm Christchurch evening it's genuinely lovely. Try The Monday Room or the terrace bars along the strip for a relaxed first drink. The Riverside Market is also on this stretch if you want casual food before a bigger night.
King of Snake — Cocktails and Small Plates
King of Snake on Victoria Street has one of the city's best cocktail programmes — inventive, well-executed, and presented in a beautifully designed interior. The food menu of Southeast Asian-influenced small plates pairs well with the drinks. It's a good second-stop venue that can sustain a whole evening. Book a table for dinner, then stay for cocktails at the bar.
The Volstead — Craft Beer and Whisky
The Volstead is the CBD's best craft beer bar with a serious whisky selection alongside. The tap list rotates to include the best of Canterbury's independent breweries and the whisky cabinet rewards those who ask for recommendations. The atmosphere is good — a proper bar that takes its product seriously without taking itself too seriously. Strong Friday evening pick.
Pomeroy's — Old School Ale House
Pomeroy's on Kilmore Street is a Christchurch craft beer institution in a heritage building. The rotating tap list focuses on NZ independent craft beer and the atmosphere is relaxed British pub-style. Beer garden out back, excellent rotating guest ales, and a food menu built around the beer. One of the city's most reliable Friday evening destinations.
Live Music — Various Venues
Christchurch has a reasonable live music scene. The Darkroom on St Asaph Street is one of the city's best small music venues. Wunderbar in Lyttelton (worth the short drive) has an excellent music programme. The Isaac Theatre Royal on Gloucester Street hosts bigger touring acts. Check local event listings — Canterbury live music is busiest on Friday and Saturday nights.
Late Night — Riverside Market and CBD Eateries
The Riverside Market has later trading hours on weekends and provides good late-night food options. Several of the CBD's ramen and Asian eateries stay open late. A Korean BBQ or ramen after a night out is a strong Christchurch tradition. The CBD is compact enough that you're never far from a late-night eating option on a Friday or Saturday.
Casino — Christchurch Casino
The Christchurch Casino on Victoria Street is the anchor of the late-night CBD. It runs 24 hours and has multiple dining options, a cocktail bar, and the full casino floor. It's not everyone's scene but it functions as a reliable late-night venue when other options close. The bar quality is decent and the people-watching is excellent.
