Christchurch is a genuinely family-friendly city. Between the flat terrain, excellent parks, world-class attractions, and a climate that rewards outdoor time, it's a place where keeping kids entertained is rarely a challenge. The challenge is more often choosing between options.
The city has major paid attractions like the International Antarctic Centre and Willowbank Wildlife Reserve alongside excellent free options including the Botanic Gardens, Margaret Mahy Playground, and the Avon River walk. Here's the best of both.
International Antarctic Centre
Christchurch is the gateway city for Antarctic operations, and the International Antarctic Centre near the airport does justice to that connection. The penguin enclosure with resident little blue penguins is the highlight for most kids. The Hagglund vehicle ride through simulated Antarctic terrain, the storm room, and the 4D theatre all add up to a full half-day. Worth the entry price for families with primary-school-aged children.
Willowbank Wildlife Reserve
Willowbank in Harewood is New Zealand's best place for close encounters with native wildlife. Kiwi can be seen in the nocturnal house — a genuine highlight that most kids remember for years. The heritage farm section with friendly animals adds to the appeal for younger children. The grounds are well laid out and manageable for a half-day visit.
Margaret Mahy Family Playground
The city's flagship playground on Fitzgerald Avenue is designed for children of all ages and abilities. Water play, flying foxes, massive climbing structures, and a dedicated toddler area make it a full-day destination for families in summer. It's free, has good parking nearby, and is right next to the Avon River for a post-play walk.
Christchurch Gondola
The gondola up the Port Hills to the Summit Station is a genuine thrill for children. The views from the top are extraordinary, and the time tunnel inside the visitor centre tells the story of Christchurch's founding with interactive displays. Combine with a short walk along the Crater Rim for the full experience. It runs daily and the ride itself takes about 10 minutes each way.
Christchurch Museum
Te Papa Whakahiku Canterbury Museum is one of New Zealand's best regional museums and it's free. The Hall of Antarctic Discovery is world-class. The natural history galleries are excellent for curious kids, and the Maori taonga collection is presented with care. Allow a couple of hours and let children lead — the discovery-based layout rewards it.
Orana Wildlife Park
New Zealand's only open-range zoo, Orana Park in Harewood gives you genuinely close encounters with African wildlife including rhino, lions, giraffe, and cheetah — alongside New Zealand native species. The lion feeding experience is unforgettable. It's a full-day activity, so bring food and be prepared for a lot of walking. Highly recommended for kids aged 5 and up.
Avon River Punting and Paddleboats
Punting on the Avon from the Antigua Boatsheds is a lovely family activity — a gentle river tour through the Botanic Gardens by a pole-wielding punt operator. You can also hire rowboats and kayaks from the boatsheds. The combination of the river, gardens, and nearby playground makes the Rolleston Avenue precinct a reliable family destination.
